Dear Diary,
Shoshana asked me if I was seasick. too. When I told her I had gained my sea
legs, she looked puzzled. Alas! I don't know what I am doing. I am practically
losing all my discipline by living with the sailors. I explained that sea legs
means that I am no longer that seasick. I told her that seasickness is common.
She acts a bit from the future.
Anyways, Flower is in paradise in Aliaranel's
garden. She drinks the nectar so many times from the same plant that it is a
wonder that the plant doesn't die from the loss of all this nectar.
I have been
pondering how I am managing for almost a whole month and only have a small bout
of scurvy that I had gotten over in a few hours. I told myself that it is
probably the sauerkraut. Disgusting stuff! I'd rather eat some nice papaya fruit.
Yum! I love that stuff. Uncle says that if we come across some papaya that we
will pick a lot of it.
I am squeezing lemon juice, lime juice, orange juice,
from any fruit I can. If we don't drink fruit juice or eat fruit or vegetables,
we will get scurvy. Uncle is giving whippings to the
sailors who don't eat their fruit or vegetables with the cat-o-nine tail. Three
lashes for every piece of fruit that they didn't eat. It is giving the crew
second thoughts about not eating all their dinner. Uncle is a bit softer
for the people who start throwing up every few bites.
Dr MacCormick is kept
busy, many new sailors are getting seasick even with their sea legs. Some of the
crew tease them calling them vulnerable. Talk about not nice. The crew members
that are teased try standing up to them but a few are just not brave enough. I try
to stand up to them but they call me behind my back "pig lover".
I am about to go
tell Uncle this, but our teatime together was cancelled because he had to
supervise the mending of a leak in the boat that was filling the store room with
water. It is a good thing it is only a few inches deep. The barrels are on the
bottom and when checked on, it didn't seem that water was leaking through.
Once the leak is mended, the water can be pumped out.
It is Melaminas' job to pound Oakum into the leak. The water is being pumped
out by two very strong men who are just about done with the job. If I were doing
it, it would be done in two hours.
I still have time for tea with uncle. It took
a ten minute delay. So I think that we will be able to still have forty minutes
left if i hurry, forty-five if i am very quick. I just have to wrap Poena up in
a blanket while Fuegia sticks a flower in her dress for Flower to feed on. I
will most certantly write more later.
(Later)
Okay... after tea time with Uncle, Fuegia asked me a wierd
question. I ponder it right at this moment in my bed. She asked me if I wasn't here that things
wouldn't be this way, that she wouldn't have Flower, she would still be lonely
if I hadn't come, etc. I ponder this and I reckon she is right. She might
not have Flower, and she probably would be lonely.
I yawn as I write this. I had
eaten all my dinner, but I slipped a few small scraps for Poena so that she can
get used to eating food, not milk.
Sipho has asked Jonathan May (the carpenter) to
make a pig trough for Janis and I.
Tomorrow, we are going to try to make up a few
contests for the day after tomorrow. I am pretty sleepy due to that I didn't
sleep last night with my fear of pirates and that I am not getting on very well
now with my sleep with birds that fly at night screeching. Darwin is out
there making a lot of noise too while he tries to catch one. Swearing very loudly
every time he fails at catching one. (yawn) I am relying on my sleepiness to carry me to sleep... Well good night.
