Dear Mother,
I am at the Cape Verde Islands. This letter is going to be
like a diary entry.
Let's start from the beginning. I started my day early. A bit
of rain—no problem at all. A slight drizzle though, still makes water build up
in the boats. That means that we are going to have a delay to get the water out of
there. I wasn't so happy.
I made a list of all the things possible for me to do. I chose to help Darwin
with his work. I asked Uncle if I could. He said it was okay, but I would have
to add another person. Fuegia was already going to help Darwin, so the other
person was a guard.
I told Uncle that a guard is not to my liking. "I am personally upset that
you are going to add a man with a gun to kill an animal, if it comes as close to hurting me. It
has a reason—the animal is attacking because we are on its territory and it is afraid that
we will harm it and its family, and harm we do. We kill it!" I explained to Uncle, but he insisted
that I would go with a guard.
I was disgusted, but I had to go as wished with a guard.
We set out. I was able to talk the guard into guarding us and Poena. Then, at
the last minute I decided that I would give her to Janis to babysit. I gave her to Janis and went
off to join Darwin and Fuegia.
We started off. First, we studied a plant that seemed to be very weird. One of
its flowers looked like a snake. When a hummingbird came, we saw it was a snake and Fuegia grabbed
the bird as the snake struck. Fortunately, the hummingbird and Fuegia were not hurt.
The hummingbird was from then on, Fuegia's pet. It followed her. (Well, she
carried it.) From then on, Flower was carried by Fuegia.
I have to get up and move on, for I am still on the journey through the forest.
I will finish tonight.
