From the Captain's Log Book...
We have docked at Cape Verde and are enjoying a well-deserved break from our ocean journey. No one is enjoying it more, I daresay, than Philos. He's taking advantage of every possible moment by exploring the island of St. Jago and has shared with me his ideas about its geology. He is also amassing a large collection of beetles.
I cannot entrust the details of my next experience even to this log book. The captain of another ship requested that I board his ship and asked me in great detail what the nature of our trip is to be. His ship left England several days after our own, but came directly to Cape Verde to intercept us.
I, of course, expressed surprise that he would know to find us here, since I had no plan of stopping here and would not have, had we been allowed to dock in Tenerife.
What he said I would have taken to be a story meant to amuse, except for all that has been
happening on the Beagle. He told me that late one night, while alone in his cabin, he had a strange experience. Suddenly, he heard voices. They appeared to be coming from his desk. He clearly heard one say, "Oh, no! This is the wrong ship!" and another say, "Captain FitzRoy's desk is placed elsewhere, so it cannot be his."
The captain decided it must be the result of too much whiskey and imagination, but the voices did not cease. In desparation, he called his first mate, who recollected that FitzRoy had sailed out on the Beagle days before their own ship. The captain beckoned his first mate to come listen to the voices, which were discussing how the Beagle would have to forego Tenerife and would arrive at St. Jago on the sixteenth.
The captain realted how he screamed at the voices to leave him and his ship alone. But instead, there was a loud rumbling noise and his desk broke apart. His first mate fainted just as a woman and child emerged from seemingly nowhere. She sent the child out into the corridor and spoke directly to the captain, imploring him to intercept us. She told him to inform me that we have agents aboard our ship and that it was unclear if their mission was good or bad. She gave him a sealed envelope to give to me and told him that I must take the child Shoshana aboard my ship.
I would not believe any of this, save for the contents of that envelope. I have entrusted Shoshana to my niece and Fuegia. I examined the ship's manifest and found that there are several people that have signed their names as "X". I had assumed that they just could not spell their names, but in light of the new information, I must consider things differently.
I must go, as I hear that we have spotted a pirate ship.
